Terms of Use

Welcome to sfmaps (the “Service”), a read-only web application that visualizes geographic information for San Francisco County. By accessing or using the Service you agree to these Terms of Use (the “Terms”). If you do not accept them, you must not use the Service.

1. Acceptance & Eligibility

You confirm you are at least 18 years of age (or the age of digital consent where you reside) and legally able to enter into a binding contract. If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent you have authority to bind that organization.

2. Data Sources & Licensing

The maps, statistics and other content displayed (collectively, “Data”) originate from multiple public-sector and open-data providers, the full list can be found at sfmaps.net/data. The Data is provided under various public-sector, open-data, and government data terms, including DataSF terms, U.S. Census Bureau terms, U.S. Government Works (17 U.S.C. § 105), and equivalent public domain or open-data licenses.

Each dataset remains © or public domain of its original provider and is redistributed here under the same license terms (e.g., U.S. Government Works under 17 U.S.C. § 105, DataSF terms, Census Bureau terms, or equivalent). You must comply with all license conditions--including attribution, share-alike, or notice requirements--when copying, sharing or remixing any Data.

3. Compilation Copyright

The selection, arrangement and visual presentation of the Data constitute a distinct database and user interface owned by sfmaps and protected by U.S. and California copyright laws. Except for rights granted by the original licenses, you may not reproduce the compilation without our prior written consent.

4. Attribution Requirement

Where license terms require attribution (e.g., CC BY 1.0) you must visibly credit the original source and sfmaps as follows (or in a manner reasonably suited to your medium): “Map data © DataSF, SFPD, U.S. Census Bureau, and contributors; visualization © sfmaps 2026.”

5. Data Provided “As-Is”

ALL DATA AND THE SERVICE ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. We do not guarantee accuracy, completeness, reliability, currency, or suitability for any purpose. You assume all risk arising from use of the Data.

6. GIS Accuracy Disclaimer

Spatial layers may be generalized, projected, or contain positional errors. They do not replace professional or legal surveys. You are solely responsible for verifying fitness for your intended use.

7. No Warranty

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable U.S. and California law, we disclaim all express and implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement. Nothing herein limits non-waivable statutory rights.

8. Prohibited Conduct

You must NOT:

9. Intellectual Property

The software, design, logos, and trademarks are the exclusive property of sfmaps or its licensors. Third-party trademarks and data remain the property of their respective owners.

10. Uptime & Maintenance

We strive for reasonable availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted Service. Planned or emergency maintenance may occur without notice.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, sfmaps will not be liable for indirect, consequential, incidental, special, punitive or exemplary damages, or for loss of profits, revenues, goodwill, or data, arising from or related to your use of the Service. Our total cumulative liability shall not exceed US $100 (or the minimum greater amount required by law).

12. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless sfmaps, its directors, employees, and affiliates from any claim, demand, or loss arising out of your: (a) use of the Service; (b) breach of these Terms; or (c) violation of any law or third-party right.

13. Compliance, Export & Sanctions

You are responsible for compliance with all local, state, federal, and international laws--including U.S. export controls and sanctions--that govern your use of the Service.

14. Governing Law & Venue

Governed by California law; exclusive jurisdiction in the state or federal courts of San Francisco County, except where mandatory law requires otherwise.

15. Modifications to Terms

We may update these Terms at any time by posting a revised version with a new “Last updated” date. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

16. Severability & Waiver

If any provision is held unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain effective. Our failure to enforce any right is not a waiver.
